Hypermedia Club

Hypermedia Club is a pseudonym adopted by Eric Eckhardt for his web3 projects, created between 2022 and 2024. These works delve into the poetics of generative art, interrogating digital authorship and the evolving aesthetics of decentralized media. Sold directly to collectors on the Tezos blockchain, these pieces exist as both artifacts of algorithmic exploration and testaments to a shifting cultural landscape. By leveraging autonomous systems, Hypermedia Club’s oeuvre reflects on the liminality between human intention and machine agency, forging a dialogue between code and creativity.

Patchwork Geometry

Patchwork Geometry

This work is an abstract geometric exploration that evokes a sense of constant change. Whether the difference is harmonious, frantic, minor, or dramatic, it is always a simple system in flux. The designs recombine combinations of simple shapes and methods to transition between them.

Persistent Positives

Persistent Positives

Communication and progress are a cycle of building, entropy, and repair. I explore that idea through a series of simple positive four-letter words that struggle for legibility under a barrage of noise. I mean it to be a moment of uplift and encouragement to continue your fight, whatever that may be.

Growth Rings

Growth Rings

This piece starts with a seed and builds expanding growth rings. It grows a catalog of rings reminiscent of tree cross-sections. These cross-sections are sliced and assembled into a grid. Random choice selects the grid size and an overlay theme. Overlay themes are meant to highlight the idea of landscape, an unbroken whole, joining, or absence.

A Record of Pursuit

A Record of Pursuit

This work is a continuation of my project "Drawing & Undrawing." I wanted to make a system with elementary agent behaviors that nevertheless felt alive. Then I thought it would be interesting to record their paths blended to visualize the system as a whole. Although abstract, I find the final result has a calm feel underwater feeling.

Drawing & Undrawing

Drawing & Undrawing

This animated drawing features a system of lines chasing invisible targets. Each line chooses a random behavior of pursuit. It can follow a target, orbit, spiral towards a mark, or scribble at the target location. Some lines draw their path; some lines erase anything they pass. In this way, the system creates white space and fills it, always trying to strike a balance of making and unmaking.

Conversation Loops

Conversation Loops

This work features 32 well-behaved autonomous agents meeting each other. The abstractness of the work allows many interpretations. The motion could bring to mind a well-choreographed elegant ballroom or sweaty anxiety-ridden speed dating event—either way, it's about meeting, mingling, and rotating eternally.

Broken Patterns Resolve

Broken Patterns Resolve

I derived this work from generative visual experiments I created way back in 2012. I was trying to make a Spirograph, also known as a Hypotrochoid if you're a mathy. I like the results of this broken code tangent more than the working version, and I revisited it from time to time. It's always special to pull a project out of the dustbin and make it dance again. Enjoy!
